Our Story
The corner of 92 Maple Street has been serving Florence, MA since the days of jukeboxes and after-school hangouts.
It all started as Andy’s Pizza in the 1960s, later becoming the Irish Pizza House, and eventually landing in the hands of John and Anne Kostides, who renamed it A-1 Pizza. Smartly chosen to be the first in the phone book*, “A-1” soon became the first stop for hungry locals looking for a hot slice or a classic grinder.
A Neighborhood Staple Since the 1960s
A-1 Pizza’s Legacy
For decades, A-1 was the go-to pizzeria in Florence — a place where teens grabbed a slice after school, couples had first dates over a shared grinder, and families picked up pizza on Friday nights after a baseball game or in advance of family movie night. Its menu was classic and comforting, its atmosphere casual and welcoming. It wasn’t just a restaurant; it was part of the rhythm of daily life in the Pioneer Valley.
A New Chapter Begins
When the opportunity arose to take over this much-loved spot, Georgianna Brunton knew it was meant to be. Already the proud owner of Miss Florence Diner (a National Register of Historic Places landmark in just down the street) Georgianna had a vision: honor the history of A-1 Pizza while giving the space a fresh identity that matched today’s Florence. And so, Miss Flo’s Pizzeria was born! Full of sass, sauce (marinara of course) and a welcoming, yet casual atmosphere, just like the good ol’ days.
* Hey Kids…or anyone too young (or too old) to remember…a “phone book” is like a big book of phone numbers, similar to a contact list on a phone, but much older, heavier and generally more cumbersome to use. In olden times, people used these massive books to find things they needed (like an awesome local pizza shop that serves hot and delicious pizza exactly the way you like it). Using a phone book was kinda like doing an internet search, but slower and a lot more work.
“Great food. Had a meatball grinder. Very filling and reasonable price. I'll definitely be back!”
- David (Local Grinder Connoisseur)

Georgianna Brunton is no stranger to running beloved local institutions. In 2018, she became the steward of the Miss Florence Diner, a historic Worcester Lunch Car Company diner built in 1941 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Under her leadership, the diner has thrived, blending timeless charm with modern hospitality enticing countless patrons to step back in time and enjoy a traditional diner meal with all the fixens.
Beyond her diner businesses, Georgianna is deeply involved and serves as a community leader in Florence, Massachusetts. She serves as President of the Florence Civic & Business Association, is a board member of the Northampton Family Fourth Committee, and participates actively in the Northampton Chamber of Commerce. Her dedication to service isn’t just professional — it’s personal. Georgie believes in the power of local businesses to knit communities together, to provide safe, welcoming spaces where everyone feels they belong.
In 2025, Georgianna acquired a second longstanding restaurant also in Florence, A-1 Pizza. This beloved pizzeria has been in operation since the early 1960’s, enjoyed by countless locals over the years. Now under the new ownership, once again, Georgianna strives to steward this long-standing business into the next chapter with exceptional care. Her hope is to honor the legacy of the pizza shop while also breathing new life into this historic space.
“Food isn’t just about filling plates — it’s about creating places where people can connect, laugh, and feel at home. I like my food hot, my humor a little sassy, and my community strong.”
